SYNOPSIS
A hero born of tragedy and tempered by an endless thirst for vengeance, Bruce Wayne's life was forever changed the moment he became a victim of circumstance after having witnessed the brutal murder of his parents at the hands of a common street thug. Driven by this tragic loss, he would dedicate the rest of his life to preying on those who would terrorize and exploit the innocents of Gotham City as its self-appointed protector, taking up the shape of a bat as his calling card. His exploits are the stuff of legends: he has outperformed Earth's greatest athletes, survived encounters that would utterly shatter lesser men, and has accomplished feats that rival or even exceed the limits of human possibility. He is respected and feared by both adversaries and allies alike; all who speak his name do so in whispers. He has been called a silent guardian at times. A watchful protector. A dark knight. A caped crusader. The world's greatest detective.
It is in the present, however, that his skills as Gotham's champion will be driven to their highest limits. The machinations of the criminal mastermind Arcade have forced his hand; he must once again don the cape and cowl to prevent his city from being overrun with wave after wave of the multiverse's worst evildoers it has to throw at him. Even with the emergence of new heroes and villains from worlds beyond his own, all of them will come to remember his legacy and his name:
The Batman.
POWERS / ABILITIES
- INDOMITABLE WILLPOWER – Though devoid of superpowers or metahuman abilities, Batman's strongest characteristic is his unstoppable determination and raw strength of grit. He has accomplished feats that are impossible by normal standards and survived challenges that would utterly break the minds and bodies of average human beings. He may be human, but the Batman is the very epitome of unbreakable fighting spirit.
- PEAK HUMAN CONDITIONING – At the tender age of eleven, Bruce committed his entire life to pursuing a hellish program of intensive physical and mental conditioning, specialized diets, and routine biofeedback procedures. His body has been elevated beyond the limits of human possibility, exceeding the performance ratings of every Olympian athlete to have ever competed. The Batman has routinely defeated opponents who are much larger, stronger, faster, tougher, and generally more well-developed than he is. To preserve his perfect physique, daily training and exercise is required.
- SYMBOL OF FEAR – The recurring theme of the Batman is to use his image and the elements of surprise and of deception to strike fear into the hearts of his foes, and he has plenty of practice refining his skill with intimidation into an art form. His name alone is enough to paralyze even the most hardened of criminals with fear, and those close to Bruce Wayne cannot help but feel threatened by his mere presence. Those who have no reason to fear the likes of Superman are utterly terrified of what the Batman is capable of.
- GOOD COP, BAD COP – Second to none when it comes to interrogation and information extraction, the Batman is well-versed in traditional questioning procedures in accordance to law enforcement protocol but is not above resorting to physical or even psychological torture.
- MASTER ACROBAT – Having mastered full body control by the time he turned eighteen, the Batman's skill in gymnastics and acrobatic maneuvers is second only to his former partner and fellow crime-fighter Richard Grayson, better known as Nightwing.
- MARTIAL ARTS PRODIGY – Formally trained and self-taught in over one-hundred and twenty-seven styles of martial arts, all of which the Batman has effortlessly mastered. His own personal fighting style is an idiosyncratic fusion of skills and techniques originating in Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Muay Thai, Dragon Kung-Fu, Boxing, Jiujitsu, Ninjutsu, and Capoeira. He is also well-knowledgeable in the locations of the human body's myriad pressure points and can strike these vital spots to produce a number of crippling effects.
- WEAPONMASTER – Expansive training in the fighting arts has bestowed the Batman with intimate knowledge of every melee weapon imaginable, from swords and knives to nunchaku and tonfa. Though he favors unarmed combat, he is not to be underestimated in the event he finds it necessary to equip a weapon for the sake of defending himself.
- MARKSMANSHIP – Impeccable skill with bows, firearms, and an assortment of throwing projectiles such as tomahawks and shuriken; this skill serves as the basis behind his frightening expertise with his trademark Batarangs. In terms of accuracy alone, the Batman is almost as skilled as the sharpshooting Oliver Queen, also known as the Green Arrow.
- SILENT PREDATOR – Extensive tutelage in the arts of espionage, deception, and infiltration give the Batman all the tools he needs to quietly enter even the most heavily-guarded locations, regardless of how thick security really is. He is skilled enough at concealing his own presence that even his own footsteps fail to make any kind of noise.
- GENIUS LEVEL INTELLECT – The cornerstone behind the Batman's overwhelming success as a vigilante. Bruce Wayne is seen as one of the smartest and most brilliant men to ever walk the Earth, and despite his lack of superpowers or metahuman traits, he compensates for this deficit with sheer cunning and his aptitude with technology, preferring to outwit his foes rather than overpower them. Skills and talents he has picked up this way include:
POLYMATH – Has extensively studied and/or achieved full degrees in the following subjects: Biology, Physics, Technology, Mathematics, History, Geography, Mythology, Criminal Science, Forensic Sciences, Medical Sciences, Basic and Advanced Computer Sciences, Basic and Advanced Chemistry, Basic and Advanced Engineering, and Advanced New Development in Forensic and Medical Sciences.EQUIPMENT / PARAPHERNALIA
EIDETIC MEMORY – Bruce can recall any piece of information he has stored away within his mind at any later point in time with perfect clarity and attention to detail, no matter how minute or insignificant something is to another person.
INVESTIGATION – He is not known as the World's Greatest Detective for nothing. Bruce has mastered the skills of forensic analysis, observation, inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning to such a point where he could very well be the closest thing to Sherlock Holmes yet. Given any unsolved mystery and, provided he has access to the relevant data, and he will almost always arrive at the correct conclusions.
MULTILINGUALISM – World travel has broadened Bruce's ability to communicate beyond the language barrier. Apart from his native English, he is perfectly fluent in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Cantonese, Mandarin, Greek, Portuguese, Arabic, Sanskrit, Hindi, Thai, and many others.
TACTICAL ANALYSIS – Batman's ability to formulate complex strategies even in the thick of battle sets him apart from many of his other superhero associates who prefer to rely on the "brute force" approach, preferring to stay ten steps ahead of his competition. He has outwitted and outsmarted countless enemies whose intellectual potential has proven vastly superior to the Batman's.
LEADERSHIP – While best suited for operating solo or in two-man cells, Bruce has demonstrated his ability to take charge of a situation and delegate his authority when the chips were down. Many respect the Caped Crusader and openly cooperate with him out of a sense of camaraderie, whereas some others simply do as he says out of fear that he will hunt them down should they even think of turning against him.
ESCAPOLOGY – Second only to Mister Miracle himself, Batman has mastered escape artistry in various forms, from picking locks to freeing himself from rope binds or iron shackles. He is able to escape from a Posey straightjacket in less than fifty-two seconds.
VEHICLE OPERATION – Bruce is adept with handling numerous types of vehicles like cars, trucks, and motorcycles with exceptional skill, however he is also proficient at flying aerial vehicles like helicopters and jets to aquatic craft like speedboats and even small sailing vessels.
DISGUISE – At the age of twenty-three, Bruce had become fully learned in the art of disguise, and continued to expand on his skills and techniques until he was twenty-six; with the right makeup and clothes, he can assume the identity of one of eight alter-egos he utilizes for the sake of infiltration, information gathering, or simply to keep a low profile. His current aliases are: Matches Malone, Thomas Quigley, Ragman, Detective Hawke, Sir Hemingford Grey, Frank Dixon, Gordon Selkirk, and Mister Fledermaus.
MECHANICAL APTITUDE – Mastered combat and stunt driving, and has acquired extensive knowledge over a variety of different automobile manufacturers and their relevant products. Numerous improvements made to preexisting vehicle models have given rise to some of Batman's most iconic modes of transportation, with the pinnacle of his achievements being none other than the Batmobile.
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT – A successful industrialist and entrepreneur, Bruce's impeccable operation of Wayne Industries has provided him with a wealth of experience and skill in the world of business management and financial marketing. He is often compared to the likes of corporate men such as Lex Luthor due to his staggering prowess in the field, and is one of the world's biggest faces in business.
- BATSUIT – An incident where a bat had inadvertently flown into his father's study imprinted on a heavily injured Bruce Wayne, who had narrowly escaped death after a confrontation with the first Red Hood, the idea to adopt the creature as his signature motif, thus forming the basis behind the creation of the first Batsuit. Since then, countless alterations and different models of the Batman's costume have been made in order for him to counter just about any problem he comes across during his adventures. The Batsuit's default functions are listed below:
OVERVIEW: Reinforced, titanium-dipped Kevlar mesh given further augmentation with the use of shear-thickening fluids makes the Batman near completely impervious to bullets and blades while responsive shock absorption technology is designed to harden on impact, not only reducing the damage he receives from melee assailants, explosions and sustained falls, but also improving the striking power behind all of his melee attacks. A Nomex weave is then added to grant the Batsuit insulating and flame-retardant properties, protecting the Batman from extreme heat and cold simultaneously. Finally, all of Batman's suits, including this one, are fully compatible with the computer interfaces of all of his vehicles, specifically the Batmobile.
COWL: Traces of lead were added to the cowl's default material composition to shield the Batman's face from X-ray powers and technology. The nostrils contain an air filtration system, which is especially useful for filtering out toxins and nerve gases. Features various sight modes which allows him to perceive the world through night vision, infrared, or ultraviolet light. Security features like tear gas sprays and a high-voltage electrical current prevents unwanted removal of the mask. Both earpieces are wired with transmitter/receiver devices linked to encrypted communications channels, as well as audio frequency receivers and sonar detection.
CAPE: A thin lattice of flexible polymer rods is weaved into the fabric of the cape to provide controlled gliding functionality and the ability to change direction and height while in midair, which works swimmingly during aerial combat. Nomex and shear-thickening fluids make the cape both fireproof and highly resistant to tears and cuts.
GAUNTLETS: Reinforced with a larger percentile of titanium and reactive shock absorption technology to better disperse kinetic rebound, allowing for harder and faster strikes. The sides of the gauntlets feature spring-loaded blades which can be released as projectiles. Later upgrades have the gauntlets able to produce a high-voltage electrical current strong enough to penetrate Kevlar body armor.
BOOTS: Reinforced with a larger percentile of titanium and reactive shock absorption technology to better disperse kinetic rebound, allowing for harder and faster strikes. Soles are fitted with high-frequency sonar emitters which allow the Batman to summon enormous flocks of bats from every corner of the county. Miniature propellers installed into the posteriors of each boot permit faster swimming speeds while underwater.
- UTILITY BELT – During an incident where a magnitude 7.6 earthquake reduced Gotham City into a shadow of its former self, it was officially designated a No Man's Land in an effort to rehabilitate its seedier neighborhoods, coercing its worst criminals to rise up and take control for themselves. To better prepare himself for anything, the Batman has opted to carry a larger, more practical version of his iconic utility belt; it features a number of pouches and hidden pockets to store all kinds of high-tech gadgets. Listed below is the Batman's default ordnance, of which he is able to freely change, add to, and subtract from between missions.
GRAPNEL GUN: A small, handheld device that houses a spool of monofilament wire that is launched by a hydraulic trigger mechanism; attached to the end of the wire is a grappling fixture that can hook onto or attach itself to nearly any surface. The wire is durable and can support the Batman's full weight plus one extra individual his size or lighter. The Grapnel Gun is multipurpose and is useful for scaling vertical planes, crossing large gaps between buildings, or even to restrain his enemies' movements or disarm them of their weapons. Has recently been upgraded with a line launcher function so that it can now set up a length of wire between two designated anchor points.VEHICLES
BATARANGS: The Batman always carries an inexhaustible supply of these collapsible, bat-shaped throwing blades, which draw heavy inspiration from the Japanese shuriken. He can also carry on him a more limited supply of explosive Batarangs, remote-controlled Batarangs, high-frequency sonic Batrangs, electrically-charged Batarangs, and even Batarangs that have been enchanted with arcane spells in the event he is faced against a foe with a weakness to magic.
EXPLOSIVE GEL: An aerosol-based liquid formula which converts into a soft, spongy gel upon exposure to air, which also renders it combustible. Using a remote-control detonator installed in the dispenser's grip, the Batman can cause a gel deposit to explode in a nonlethal but powerful kinetic shockwave accompanied by a bright flash, and he can trigger a sequence of up to five timed detonations this way.
CRYPTOGRAPHIC SEQUENCER: A handheld electronic security infiltration device which allows the Batman to hack into and override any encrypted computer terminals, security cameras, radio broadcast frequencies, and other miscellaneous software; it is essentially a digital lockpicking tool. Also moonlights as a police transmitter for Batman's routine patrols.
LOCKPICKING SET: Never one to leave things to chance, Bruce carries a master's set of lockpicking tools to help him bypass any physical lock that he encounters, and he's come across plenty of them in his time.
MICRO-RECORDER: A small audio receiver which Batman uses to bug electronic devices so that he can eavesdrop in places he does not have immediate access to. Each device is about the size of a quarter and has enough memory to retain up to fifteen minutes of sound with crystal clear quality.
SMOKE PELLETS: Spherical implements containing a liquid which converts into a thick cloud of gray smoke upon exposure to oxygen. All it takes to detonate one of these tiny balls is the right amount of pressure, and each of these capsules releases its contents over a thirty foot diameter. He also carries tear gas variants as well as a small handful containing a dose of the Scarecrow's fear toxin.
REBREATHER: Ultracompact respiratory device that the Batman makes liberal use of during underwater missions or within hostile breathing conditions. It possesses the same air filtration technology that can be found in the nostrils of his cowl, but wearing this device gives Batman more room for relaxed breathing.
KRYPTONITE RING: Once owned by Lex Luthor as a cheap, easy way to ward off the Man of Steel, this piece of jewelry was crafted from the heart of the villain Metallo, however prolonged exposure to its radioactive properties gave Luthor cancer. It eventually fell into the Batman's ownership sometime later, where he keeps it isolated inside a lead pouch on his utility belt to avoid sharing the corporate tycoon's fate. It only sees usage during moments when Superman either loses composure over his powers or is forced to do the bidding of a nefarious puppet master.
REMOTE CONTROL TRANSMITTER: A universal transmitter programmed with the computer signatures of every vehicle in the Batman's hangar, from the Batmobile to the Batcycle and the Batwing. Fitted directly on the buckle of his utility belt, each of its three vertically positioned buttons activates the auto-pilot mode of whatever vehicle he wishes to bring to his location: pressing the topmost button summons the Batwing, whereas the lowermost button calls the Batcycle, leaving the center button reserved for the Batmobile.
- BATMOBILE: When time is of the essence, no other vehicle in the Batman's garage gets the job done better than his main set of street wheels. The Batmobile has adopted a bulkier, more intimidating appearance as of recent years, taking on elements shared with most armored military assault vehicles. This monster of an automobile comes packing a high-powered turbine jet engine as reversible exhaust ports all over the vehicle work to disperse waste heat, and is installed with targeting features, an auto-pilot option, a power winch system on the front, on-board navigational interface with video uplink, ejector seats, optic and thermal cloaking technology, and even remote-control software which allows the Batman or anyone with proper authorization to operate the Batmobile from behind the scenes; all of which is protected by a reactive, impact-resistant, bulletproof, and fireproof titanium diboride exoskeleton and mounted atop four enormous, Kevlar-reinforced, all-terrain gyroscopic tires. Its default arsenal of installed non-lethal weaponry includes, but is not limited to: spiked caltrops, oil slicks, dual smokescreen exhausts, retractable tire-slashing blades installed in the hubcaps, riot suppressors, and gas dispensers equipped with both standard smoke and samples of the Scarecrow's fear toxins. Also houses a self-destruct mechanism in the event the Batmobile is hijacked or stolen.
- BATCYCLE: A smaller, arguably faster alternative to the Batmobile, the Batcycle has also underwent numerous design changes since the Batman's debut as a vigilante. Like its bulkier counterpart, the Batcycle is protected by a titanium diboride frame and comes equipped with a 1,200cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine which lets the Batman reach up to speeds of 195mph. The only additional features of note, as it was not designed to be all-purpose like the Batmobile had been, are its Kevlar-reinforced tires, a Batarang launcher installed into the front of the bike's frame, its on-board computer interface and navigational software, and a self-destruct protocol which the Batman can activate at any point for a nasty surprise.
- BATWING: The largest and most conspicuous mode of travel the Batman has yet, it is a heavily modified Wayne Aviation SlipStream—which is priced on the market at a modest $46 million, sans additional conveniences—that has been detailed to take on the likeness of a corporate executive's travel jet during takeoff or landing procedures. It has a maximum altitude of 60,000 feet and can reach speeds that barely cap at Mach 6. At cruising heights, the plane's telescoping wings will retract as articulated sections of its armored frame reposition themselves to seal the cockpit and cabin fuselage for greater altitude pressurization. When Flight Mode is engaged, its wings will elongate in tandem with the delta fins on its tail and snub winglets in order to improve stability and flight efficiency. It is at maximum altitude that the Batwing's Stealth Mode activates; its ceramic armor is coated with an adaptive "smart paint" which not only shields the plane from radar technology, but also responds to sudden changes in atmospheric pressure and temperature, causing the paint to transition to a stealthy black color. All electronic displays and avionics installed in the cockpit are built around an ergonomic "at-a-glance" design, granting the Batman access to anything he could possibly need, as well as an ejector system for both pilot and copilot seats. Finally, the cockpit windows are made of an acrylic glass polymer which polarize at stealth altitudes. From time to time, it has been known to make use of its twin Vulcan machine guns, both of which are loaded with generous quantities of rubber bullets.
